About www.sixfingeredman.net

Basic stuff

My name is Adrian Quark. This is my site. I won't bother apologizing for how self-centered it is, because I know you'll leave as soon as you feel I'm wasting your time. I don't really have six fingers; the site's name is a reference to The Princess Bride. I love to get email from anybody, and I usually answer pretty quickly.

I believe in moderation in all things (including moderation). Another way of expressing this is that nothing is truly an end unto itself (style). That is partly why this site is so ugly; it is my way of atoning for the sins inflicted on users by graphic designers. Most of this site is formatted and structured automatically by a custom content management system. The result for visitors is not very nice, but it saves me the most time.

Various sections

Until I get things more organized I should tell you a bit about the way the sections work:

Blog
This is my "public journal." I post news, thoughts, pictures, interesting links, etc.
Quotes
I collect quotes from discussion groups, books, anything that sounds interesting.
Brain
Ideas which pop into my head get jotted down in this daily notebook.
Ideas
Sometimes I have a more complete idea, or maybe I just want to file it by name instead of by date, so I put it here. Though in general this section is a lot rougher than I wish it was.
Writing
This should be pretty self-explanatory. Unfortunately it's mostly rather embarassing stuff from high-school, but there's one or two good bits.
TODO
Wil Wheaton inspired me to do this. It's a lot of fun and gives you some perspective. Plus it's a good excuse to say "Wil Wheaton inspired me." So try it.
Photos
These are photographs taken by me and my friends.
Graphics
These are images usually collected off the internet; anything I wanted to save which isn't a photograph I took, really.
Projects
I can't say I'm a very productive or hard-working person, but I do tend to have a few different "extra-curricular projects" going on at once.
Recipes
From my recipe file, which is currently very small. If something is here I've either cooked it or am planning to.
Books
Impressions, notes, and reviews.
Movies
Impressions, notes, and reviews.
Links
Sites directly related to me.
Old site
This is a personal site I started in 1997; parts of it are as recent as 2000, parts are still left over from the very original. All the good content (photos, writing, etc.) has mostly moved here, but it's still an interesting curiosity. Plus it proves I'm capable of creating a decent-looking site even if nowadays I choose not to.

I also put links on the front page to things I'm currently interested in: "read", "listen", "watch", and maybe others. These change whenever it occurs to me.

Disclaimer

There are three basic strategies to coping with life: taking yourself too seriously (aka intellectualism), taking the world too seriously (aka romanticism), and taking nothing seriously (aka pointing and laughing, or post-modernism). Since ``balanced objectivity'' isn't on that list, I figure the best approach is to oscillate wildly between the three. So you'll see a lot of that around here. :)

We like to portray ourselves differently to different people, and creating a personal website ruins this because it presents the same face to everyone. I prefer to take the optimistic viewpoint: I have the artistic license to show a face I would normally present to no one.

So you've been warned.

kinds of directions. It's the only way to make progress."
