Every once in a while, it's good to sit down, consider your goals in life, and reflect on how little you actually do is geared towards achieving them. It's fun, and gives you perspective. So here are my goals at last reflection:

  • build a boat/car/motorcycle from scratch
  • do photography
  • become fluent in a foreign language
  • join the peace corps
  • do an improv comedy camp
  • create a computer language
  • understand QM
  • write a book
  • try karaoke
  • become an awesome dad
  • introduce someone to a passion
  • fly an airplane
  • learn to juggle
  • become good at some martial art
  • swing dance
  • camp primitive and alone
  • visit the south pole
  • go a year without a computer
  • read the koran
  • visit a buddhist monastery in tibet
  • run naked in the rain
  • learn Japanese
  • learn Italian
  • learn Spanish
  • come up with a really wicked April Fools' joke
  • join a band (a REAL band)
  • write a novel (different from a book!)
  • teach
  • learn to crochet (or knit)
  • play the bagpipes
  • skydive

Translation is entirely mysterious. Increasingly I have felt that the art of
writing is itself translating, or more like translating than it is like
anything else. What is the other text, the original? I have no answer. I
suppose it is the source, the deep sea where ideas swim, and one catches them
in nets of words and swings them shining into the boat ... where in this
metaphor they die and get canned and eaten in sandwiches.
