lucid dreamingThe literature does a lot of encouraging us to go against social rules. I disagree with this in principle; morality shouldn't change because you're dreaming. These are opportunities to overcome shallow impulses, not to give into them. On the other hand, it's important to draw the line between truly immoral things (i.e. stealing, killing, being rude, etc.) and things which are simply socially restricted (having sex, being naked, using a napkin...) And of course you can always change an awkward situation into something more fun; most of the immoral drives like greed and jealousy needn't hold in dreams. Reading accounts of gaps in lucidity, I wonder at the ability to "jump out of the system." Many people seem to simply be dreaming that they are lucid, without actually being so (as illustrated by confused, illogical thinking). One must recognize that at some point, it is impossible to take total control of the dream, just as it is impossible to have free will in real life. |
