consciousness is emotion

She'd heard of a human philosopher who claimed that consciousness was an emotion. She wondered if it wasn't the other way around... you can't have emotion without self, can you? Is it still emotion? Sometimes you feel an impetus, like gravity dragging the future inwards, that pulls you stumbling into the next thought. Is that emotion? Or is emotion the tingly be-ing which ripples like waves through your awareness, your mind receiving it as the sea floor recieves the flickering web of light invented by the surface? She suspected it was the latter. An ant's hunger is different from the wrenching pain which colors the life of a starving child.
