I just finished re-reading the Rama series, and I was positively blown away. It's a great example of how good writing is fractal. The message is illustrated at many levels: the overall plot arc, the evolution of individual characters, explicitly in the narrative, and implicitly in events large and small. A big part of that message is, I believe, that the ultimate goal of the universe is for every atom to be part of a living process. I like this scientific way (barring room for debate about what a living process is) of expressing what I think more religious people mean when they say "harmony".

To Pure Mathematics - may it never have any practical use!
