Zen teaches us to live in the now. But our ability to NOT live in the now is what makes us human. Rational thought comes from the ability to imagine -- to live in the future and the past, and observe patterns through time rather than always living in the moment.

Humans are always in denial of their own humanity. See original sin, also. We're in the unique middle position. Animals aren't smart enough to know what they're missing, and Gods have the understanding and power that we lack. What if humans' desire to not be human is the reason they exist. What if God created us to give him value and existence through our envy. Sort of like positive and negative ground.
