When you cut off your finger, it hurts. But usually you can't pick the finger up out of the dirt, dust it off, and scotch-tape it back in place. Just doesn't work -- it would be all nasty, crooked, and infected, if it stuck at all. You have to learn to live without the finger, pain and all, until it's all healed again. (In this analogy, pretend you're a star fish and the finger grows back after a while.)
